The owner of Explore Britain, Philip Scriver, has a wide experience of walking and hiking in Great Britain, Ireland and the USA.

I have hiked extensively in the United States, completing the full length of the Appalachian Trail (2,000+ miles) in 1980 as a thru-hiker.

I started working as a walking tour guide with English Wanderer in 1981, and Abercrombie and Kent and group leader in the UK for Elderhostel. I moved on to offer inn-to-inn, self-guided independent walking tours via my explorebritain website in 1999.

I live in County Durham in Northern England with my wife Jennifer. We got married in 2008 at the home of Bobbie Shafto! The winter months are spent preparing special tours for our returning clients.

I continue to offer my personal knowledge of the beautiful countryside of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and to advise the best options for independent travel. I am able to "tailor" any of the walking and hiking tours and holidays to suit your requirements; in terms of days, mileage walked, hotel or B&B category or location.

I aim to work as quickly and as efficiently as possibly to make the booking experience as pleasurable as the holidays themselves. I aim to be flexible and accommodating to your needs. If you want something slightly different than that which is listed in the website, I CAN offer it. I aim to make a dream holiday a reality.

Explore Britain attempt to recycle as much of our business waste for charity as possible. Our printer cartridges support Butterwick Hospice Bishop Auckland.

If you belong to a charity and wish to gain from recyling waste, contact The Mobile Phone Recycling Appeal for mobile phones and printer cartridges.

If you are requiring a taxi try Airport Chauffeurs Executive Travel Silverline Cars Bristol, for touring in the Bristol, Bath and Cotswold area then please try SILVERLINE CARS. You will find Mike Worley very accommodating to your needs.

For some delightful places to stay in County Durham in northern England we use DURHAM FARM COTTAGES, especially on our coast to coast bike tour.

Other Recommendations

Bob Mizen of South Wales is our first choice for those who would like to travel from Bristol or London, directly to our tours in Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons. You will find their website at SOUTH WALES CHAUFFEUR. They can also meet you at the end of the Offa's Dyke Walk tour and take you to London or Bristol.

Our very first walking tour website was created by JARED SMITH, who worked with us as a student to provide an excellent website using, what was for then, the new concept of a database driven site. He continues to do freelance work, as always making the forefront of technology accesible to all. Thanks Jared!

This website was initially produced by EDWARD ROBERTSON in 2002 and upgraded in 2014 to meet the needs of newer technology. Set up in 1996, they provide creative web design solutions for national and regional companies, the emphasis being on getting the right response from the correct audience. We have been pleased with their projects for us, which met our objectives and exceeded our expectations, and they speak in plain English.

We have used Excel Taxis of Corfe Castle to transfer our luggage along the Dorset Coast Path in the Pubeck Hills. Excel Taxis is a family run business set in the picturesque town of Corfe Castle, which is right in the heart of The Isle Of Purbeck. At present we have available 4, 6 and 8 seater taxis and further taxis will soon be joining the fleet. Wareham, Poole and Bournemouth are local pick-ups for them.

We recommend the use of car sharing if you have regular journeys to and from work, or looking for walking or cycling buddies. The website Liftshare Solutions encourages: walking, cycling, and efficient car and taxi use and better use of community and public transport. Liftshare solutions are: Affordable, proven, successful and easy to implement. Liftshare solutions help: Reduce congestion, improve air quality, improve accessibility and improve road safety.

When visiting Loch Ness and the village of Drumnadrochit we recommend Loch Ness Lodge Hotel & Nessieland.

When visiting London call in an see The London Beatles Store, on 231/233 Baker Street, NW1.

Dear Philip. We're back in the US, and while we are happy to be home we are still wallowing in the pleasure of our six days on the Coast to Coast walk. Our thanks to you for everything, especially for getting us to the train on that last day and for sending Mal to meet us after our shattering day into Shap. We were pooped, as they say, and it lifted our spirits wonderfully to have his fine company at the end of that long day and the next morning when he shuttled us to Orton. Please give him our regards and our enthusiastic thanks. We feel privileged to have met both of you and to have been taken care of by such lovely hosts at the guesthouses and inns you arranged--especially Irene and David in St. Bee's and Nigel and Trish in Seatoller. It was a trip we will always remember, and our hope is that we'll have occasion before too long to be in touch again to arrange another visit to Britain. All best to you, and thank you again for everything.
